Purpose
This course will introduce students to the basics of making public speeches in English. It will include: methods for generating content, making outlines, basic presentation skills, and an introduction to expressions and conventions used in English speeches. Students will have in-class opportunities to practice and refine their skills. This course is required for all first year students.
Target
To introduce students to the basics of making and presenting speeches in English.To introduce students to online tools to foster independent learning.To familiarize students with common vocabulary and idioms used in English speeches.To provide students with opportunities to practice and refine their speech making skills.
Contents
Introduction: Course overview. Explanation of final assignment. Introduction to speech-making. Getting to know your fellow students.
Form and Theory 1: Speaking Posture (SOS p10-12). Identifying goals and purpose of speeches. Outlining a speech -Introductions (SOS p 62-63).
Form and Theory 2: Outlining a speech: Body (SOS p.69, 77-78) and Conclusions (SOS p.87-88). Homework: Outline your speech.
Language Learning 1: Introduction to Corpus tools. Developing independent learning skills.
Language Learning 2: Common Phrases and idioms used in speeches.
Language Practice 1: Developing your speeches.
Language Practice 2: Refining your speeches.
Presentation of speeches (Final Presentation).
Task
Students will be required to give a 2-minute presentation on a topic.
Grade Policy
Students will be graded on participation (40%) and final presentations (60%).
