Purpose

This course will introduce students to the basics of making visual presentations in English (PowerPoint and poster presentations). It will include: an introduction and overview of PowerPoint and poster presentations, introductions to visual design concepts and techniques used to make presentations more effective, English expressions and conventions used in presentations. Students will have in-class opportunities to practice and refine their skills. This course is required for all first year students.

Target

To introduce students to the basics of making PowerPoint and poster presentations in English.To introduce and familiarize students with software used to make presentations using visual aids.To introduce design concepts used in visual presentations.To familiarize students with common English vocabulary and idioms used in presentations.To provide students with opportunities to practice and refine their presentation skills.

Contents

  • Introduction: Overview of the course. Explanation of mid-term assignment. Introduction to PowerPoint presentations.

  • Form and Theory 1: 1st PowerPoint software tutorial. Using visual aids effectively (SOS p.40-44).

  • Form and Theory 2: 2nd PowerPoint software tutorial. Using charts and graphs (SOS p.40-44). Gestures (SOS p 18-24).

  • Language Learning 1: Language used in presentations: Greetings, introductions, overviews, main body, conclusions.

  • Language Learning 2: Language used in presentations: Transitions, highlighting, describing visuals, summarizing, closing / wrapping up presentations..

  • Language Practice 1: Developing your presentations.

  • Language Practice 2: Refining your presentations.

  • PowerPoint Presentations (Mid-term Presentation).

  • Introduction: Introduction to poster presentations. Explanation of final assignment. Purposes and examples of poster presentations.

  • Form and Theory 1: Creating a poster: Software options and tutorials. Overview of poster presentation forms and design.

  • Form and Theory 2: Design considerations. Tips on Giving an effective poster presentations.

  • Language Learning 1: Greetings and Openings, Introductions, Explaining visuals. Language forms used to present ideas clearly.

  • Language Learning 2: Persuasive language: Making Suggestions and recommendations.

  • Language Practice 1: Developing your presentations.

  • Language Practice 2: Refining your presentations.

  • Poster Presentation (Final Presentation).

Task

Students will be required to give a 4-minute PowerPoint presentation (mid-term) and a 3-minute poster presentation on a topic (final).

Grade Policy

Students will be graded on participation (30%) a mid-term presentation (35%), and final presentation (35%).
